Medicare

Medicare, explained without the jargon.

Medicare can feel overwhelming. We help you understand how the pieces fit together — so you can choose coverage that fits your health, your doctors, and your budget.

Start With The Basics

The four parts of Medicare, in plain English.

Once you understand what each part does, the rest of your decisions get much easier. Here is the short version.

A

Hospital Insurance

Part A helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if they worked and paid Medicare taxes long enough.

B

Medical Insurance

Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. Part B has a monthly premium, and together with Part A it makes up what is called Original Medicare.

C

Medicare Advantage

Part C plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They bundle your Part A and Part B coverage, often include drug coverage, and may offer additional benefits — typically within a plan network.

D

Prescription Drugs

Part D helps cover prescription drug costs. You can get it as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare, or built into many Medicare Advantage plans. Each plan has its own list of covered drugs.

Your Two Main Paths

Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare with a Supplement?

Most people end up choosing between two broad approaches. Neither is right or wrong — they fit different health situations, budgets, and preferences.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

One plan that bundles hospital, medical, and usually drug coverage, offered by a private insurer. Many plans have lower monthly premiums and may include extras like dental, vision, or hearing benefits. In exchange, you generally use the plan’s network of doctors and hospitals, and costs are managed through copays and an annual out-of-pocket maximum.

Original Medicare + Medicare Supplement

You keep Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan that helps pay the share of costs Original Medicare does not cover. You can typically see any provider in the country who accepts Medicare, with very predictable out-of-pocket costs — usually in exchange for a higher monthly premium. A standalone Part D plan handles your prescriptions.

Which path fits depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, how much you travel, and how you prefer to pay for care — a lower premium with cost-sharing as you go, or a higher premium with fewer surprises. That conversation is exactly what we are here for.

Timing Matters

Know your enrollment windows.

Medicare runs on a calendar. Missing a window can mean waiting months for coverage or paying late penalties, so it pays to know which one applies to you.

01

Initial Enrollment Period

A 7-month window around your 65th birthday — the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after. This is when most people first sign up for Parts A and B.

02

Annual Enrollment Period

October 15 through December 7 each year. You can join, switch, or drop Medicare Advantage and Part D plans, with new coverage starting January 1.

03

Special Enrollment Periods

Certain life events — like moving, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for extra help — can open a window to make changes outside the usual periods. If something in your life has changed, it is worth asking.
